The immigration courthouse on lower Broadway has already been the scene of many Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrests of people following their hearings, part of a national operation that has hit people applying for asylum.
Now, just across the street, a private security contractor working with ICE is summoning other immigrants to what are usually routine check-ins — only to arrest them on the spot.
On Tuesday, a reporter and photographer for THE CITY witnessed federal agents shuttling at least 16 people out of a nondescript office building where people in deportation proceedings are required to report.
The people loaded into the vehicles, each with their hands behind their backs and escorted by masked officers in plainclothes, were escorted from a nondescript basement office run by the company BI Inc., a subsidiary of the private prison behemoth GEO Group.
People outside the office said they had received an unusual message on the company’s phone app: “Your ICE official has asked that you present yourself in the office to review your case this week,” it read. “Please arrive at the office Tuesday the 3rd, or Wednesday the 4th of June. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to us.”

In Brooklyn, there is no service on the L line between the Myrtle-Wyckoff Avenues and Lorimer Street stops from 11:45 p.m. to 5 a.m. through Friday, June 6. Free shuttle buses will make all stops, with the line operating in two sections during overnight hours, as MTA crews work to replace tracks.
